Beautiful Soft Skin
Your skin is delicate and should always look its best.
Age Spots
Age spots, often called liver spots, are grey, brown, red, or black spots on the skin. They are usually found on the hands, face, shoulders, arms, and forehead. They can occur anywhere the sun hits. Usually they are seen in people over 40, but sometimes younger.
Causes
Age Spots are caused by the sun. The sunlight causes an overproduction of melanin, which causes dark spots in concentrated areas. The extra melanin becomes clumped. Age spots appear over time with increased sun exposure. They are especially evident in older people and can also be caused by tanning beds.
Effects
People with lighter skin are more likely to get age spots. They are flat colored spots that can look like the size of freckles or much bigger. Often they are grouped together. They are not raised but lay flat against your skin.
Age spots are not necessarily a cause for concern and do not mean you have skin cancer. You do not need to see medical attention unless they have become very dark or change in shape and color. If you are worried, there is no probably with asking your doctor just in case.
Prevention and Treatment
The best way to avoid age spots is through prevention. Age spots are caused by the sun. Wear sunscreen and avoid being outdoors when the sun rays are the highest in intensity. By taking the same precautions with the sun as you would to avoid premature aging, you should be able to avoid sunspots.
If you have sunspots that you want to get rid of, you can try prescription bleaching, laser therapy, or other medical treatments. You will need to talk with your doctor or dermatologist about any of these treatments and others.
The best advice I can give you is “Prevention is key!”
